Car temperature gauge goes up and down
Dec 09, 2012 · The dummy check engine light came on today while my wife was driving. The engine temperature gauge never left cold. She drove where she was going and shut it off. It sat for 3 or 4 hours. She started it again and went to her sisters. She called me when she got there. She said it wouldn't start... Feb 06, 2010 · My temperature gauge in my car is fluctuating as i drive? I was thinking it may be the thermostat but if it was stuck open it would run cooler, and the heat is blowing fine. It revs high when the temp drops up and down then levels out until it does it again.
High temp warning light goes on and off ... get on the freeway and speed up, BUT the high temperature warning light will intermittently come on. ... the car back ... I then ran it down to empty and drained the tank, pulled the sending unit out and bent the float arm up. Reinstalled and the filled with 5 gallons of gas checked for accuracy and then had to repeat. This is a pain but now when I fill it up it goes to full and when I am on "E" I know I have about 3 gallons left. I have had the same issue in my FJ62 recently - temp gauge runing high, flushed radiator and put in new coolant and new thermostat. Still have same issue. Find coolant low about every week with no signs of a leak. Sometimes gauge will spike to High and then go down to normal withing a minute or two. As soon as the car warms up to normal operating temperature, the gauge spikes up to 100% red. I know that the engine is not overheating because there is no steam coming from the engine (I've had cars that truly overheat in the past), and at times after long trips the needle falls back down to a normal temperature, just above half.

If the coolant flows too fast, the engine will never get to it's normal operating temp; therefore, the temp gauge will drop down as you're flying down on the highway.
May 04, 2014 · Sitting at idle it has gotten over half way from the center line and the overheat range..same applies to driving under load. From idle, once IO start moving, the temp goes down. When the temp rises while engine is under load, the temp drops when RPM drops and the load is gone (over the hill, etc..).
Oct 24, 2013 · I know everyone is telling me head gasket but I haven't replaced it yet, I'm also not driving the car. I have let the car run/idle in my yard and I've noticed a few things. When the temp gauge goes up now, it does not come back down like I earlier posted. It only comes down after letting the engine cool.
